Shale gas protest

DUTCH ANTI-FRACKING ACTIVISTS TO PICKET AT SHELL HEADQUARTERS

Cape Town, South Africa, 21 August 2014 – Activists resisting shale gas fracking in the Karoo and globally will today picket outside Shell’s offices at 10 Rua Vasco Da Gama, Foreshore at 16h00.

Critically, activists from Milieudefensie [1] (and partner organisations) in The Netherlands have come to South Africa to understand Shell’s plans for the Karoo in order to place pressure on the Dutch corporation back home. Also part of the picket will be two small-scale emerging farmers from Willowmore and Steytlerville in the Karoo affiliated to the Southern Cape Land Committee [2], and members of Pietermaritzburg NGO groundWork [3]. The picket will focus specifically on the question of contamination of water in the Karoo, amongst other negative impacts that are associated with shale gas fracking.
