2020: “The Elites don’t care” – People on the frontline of Coal, Covid and the Climate Crisis.

The year 2020 was brutal. But this was nothing new for the millions of South Africans who are unemployed, who go without the basics needed to live well, and who are excluded from meaningful participation in our post-apartheid South Africa. Covid struck and time stood still for many of us. But for the majority it did not. It intensified their suffering and people continued to ‘hustle’ as many community activists told NGOs in the dialogues of the C19 People’s Coalition.

This civil society coalition seeks to ensure that “South Africa’s response to the Covid-19 crisis is one that is rooted in social justice and democratic principles” prioritising the most vulnerable. For the majority, locking themselves in their homes behind walls to keep safe was not an option.
