groundWork is looking for a committed and enthusiastic Intern to join our Environmental Justice Education (EJE) Campaign on a 12-month fixed-term contract from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental justice work while supporting grassroots education and activism initiatives. 

The Environmental Justice Education campaign focuses on building a cohort of knowledgeable and skilled environmental justice community activists who can mobilise democratically against environmental injustices and foster restorative, people-centred just transition practices. 

In this role, you will: 

  • Support planning, logistics, and administration for EJE events, including: 
  • Curriculum Review Processes 
  • Anglophone African Environmental Justice Schools (EJS) 
  • South African Environmental Justice Schools 
  • Supervise Environmental Justice School participants in residence 
  • Attend meetings and take minutes 
  • Provide administrative and logistical support, including: 
  • Financial requests 
  • Disbursements 
  • Reconciliations 
  • Support the EJE Campaign Lead with planning and facilitation of workshops 
  • Attend and support EJE workshops 
  • Maintain the EJE learning materials cataloguing system 
  • Monitor EJE social media platforms 
  • Work collaboratively with the EJE team and assist with ad-hoc tasks 

 

  

We’re looking for someone who: 

Is between the ages of 18 years and 35 years 

Holds a qualification or equivalent experience in Social Sciences, Development Studies, or Environmental Studies 

Resides in Durban 

Is passionate about environmental justice and community development, or willing to learn 

Is fluent in at least two South African languages – with any additional languages being a bonus.
